Wrought Iron is a type of iron that acts in a similar fashion to wood grain. The word wrought is actually the past tense of the word work. In our case wrought iron simply means iron that has been worked. Due to its malleable and ductile properties, wrought iron makes an excellent material for welding. It was originally created by a method known as bloomery. This technique involves charcoal heated smelting. The actual bloom is a mass of iron and silicates. One would work this bloom into the desired shape. While it is worked, different strands of slag become incorporated into the metal. This is what produces the wood grain like texture. Hammering this type of metal causes the fibres to pack tightly together. This increases the strength of the iron.

Over time the methods for creating wrought iron changed. Coke replaced charcoal as the fuel source due to its efficient burning nature. Different oxides were incorporated into the mixture creating carbon dioxide. This process received the name of faggoting. It is from this process that the iron receives its wood like texture.
